A Coffee Professional, also known as a Barista or Coffee Specialist, is responsible for preparing and serving high-quality coffee and other beverages, providing exceptional customer service, and maintaining a clean and organized coffee shop or café. This role may vary in specific responsibilities depending on the establishment's size and specialization, but it typically involves a combination of customer interaction, coffee preparation, and operational tasks.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Coffee Preparation:

    • Expertly prepare and serve a wide range of coffee beverages, including espresso, cappuccino, latte, pour-over, cold brew, and more.
    • Ensure coffee quality by using proper brewing techniques and maintaining equipment (grinders, espresso machines, etc.).
    • Keep up-to-date with industry trends, coffee bean origins, and brewing methods to provide customers with a diverse coffee experience.
  2. Customer Service:

    • Greet and assist customers in a friendly and professional manner, taking their orders and addressing any questions or concerns.
    • Recommend coffee selections and provide information on flavor profiles, brewing methods, and food pairings.
    • Handle customer complaints or inquiries with empathy and problem-solving skills.
  3. Food Preparation:

    • Prepare and serve a variety of pastries, snacks, and light meals that complement the coffee menu.
    • Ensure food safety and hygiene standards are consistently met.
  4. Cash Handling and Point of Sale (POS) Operation:

    • Accurately handle cash and card transactions through the POS system.
    • Manage customer bills, handle cash register operations, and issue receipts.
  5. Maintaining Cleanliness and Order:

    • Clean and sanitize the coffee shop area, including tables, counters, and equipment.
    • Restock coffee beans, ingredients, and supplies as needed.
    • Ensure a well-organized and aesthetically pleasing environment.
  6. Inventory Management:

    • Monitor inventory levels and order supplies, such as coffee beans, milk, syrups, and other consumables.
    • Keep track of expiry dates and rotate stock to maintain freshness.
  7. Training and Education:

    • Stay informed about new coffee products and brewing methods.
    • Train and mentor new staff members on coffee preparation techniques and customer service standards.
  8. Compliance and Safety:

    • Adhere to health and safety regulations, ensuring a safe environment for both customers and employees.
    • Maintain a clean and organized workspace, following food safety guidelines.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; some establishments may require formal barista or coffee-related training.
  • Prior experience in a similar role, ideally in a coffee shop or café.
  • A passion for and knowledge of coffee, including different brewing methods, coffee bean varieties, and latte art.
  • Strong customer service skills, including effective communication and the ability to handle customer inquiries and complaints.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and high-pressure environment.
  • Attention to detail, cleanliness, and excellent organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in using POS systems and cash handling.
  • Basic knowledge of food safety and hygiene regulations.
